We just had dinner with some friends that we "came in with". They have a daughter about laney's age, and the girls get along really well. This is the family's return to singapore after 2 years back in the states and 2 years in Dubai. It's so easy here, it's often hard to remember we moved to the other side of the world!
The place we had dinner was a famous hawker stand-very tasty! Satay, vegetables, and noodles. Heading back to home in taxi and Ethan and laney are arguing about the correct Chinese pronunciation of words!
Yesterday, laney and I had foot reflexology - Yikes! Pain! Too much walking and seafood, they said. At the bathroom afterwards, we had to pay S$.10 for toilet paper-the picture of the machine is below.

Friday night
The first full week of school is over-my class is wonderful. It's like coyote hills was airlifted to singapore! I have 22 students in my 5th grade class; 11 are girls and 11 are boys. I also have the most remarkable IA(instructional assistant). She has been at the school for 15 years, and is the head IA for 5th and maybe the whole intermediate school. I walked in the room and it was SO organized-she does all the copying and bulletin boards, as well as all the organizational nitty gritty beginning of the year stuff. It is like I arrived in teaching heaven!
Ethan and laney are settling in-all new students are assigned a buddy so both Ethan and laney have been primarily hanging out with their buddy. Since the students come and go so frequently as their parent is transferred, most have been the new kid relatively recently.
Our shipment finally arrives tomorrow-it was pAcked on June 6! People here say it is like Christmas! We are taking a taxi every morning and afternoon, ordering dinners to take home from the caterers at school each night, and have a cleaning lady here right now for her weekly visit. No live-in helper for us-just not large enough of a place.
I am learning to adjust to the heat and accompanying environmental changes that go along with the humid climate. Mold is a major issue, so there are lots of anti-mold products that are horrific smelling-imagine mothball scent with a tinge of fish paste. Add the Asian food smells mingled with Indian and malay food, and you quickly realize you are a far way from Southlands. Josh and I agreed before we came that we would not discuss the heat-so I am not mentioning the hottest place I have ever been. However, the breeze at night is lovely, and the rain is fantastic. So is air-con.
Off to watch the twinkling of the skyline as I read, gazing at the view from the 13th floor. Pretty brilliant!
Thanks for all of the comments-please pass on this site to everyone. I know I missed so many people-something happened to the massive email blast I sent out to let everyone know about the blog!
Lastly, I found the advertisement posted below in little india the first week we were here. Made me a bit nervous about coping with the stress of teaching in Singapore!

National Day
We all came back to the spot on the harbor where I had dinner last night. It's called the Marina Bay Gardens. Right as we got off the mrt, a myriad of fighter jets flew overhead in this amazing display that left us speechless. Apparently there is a strong US military presence here and many of the students at SAS are their kids. Just like Buckley families in tallyn's reach!
My second post
As I wait for national day fireworks to start, all I can think about is when at least 8 fighter jets went roaring over my head and caused me temporary deafness(my hearing just came back).
Now I think about one thing: Is the firework show really worth the wait? I will tell you later.
For the birds,
Ethan Curnett

Hawker stand in our neighborhood
I am not sure if this is so crowded because tomorrow's a national holiday or just the typical busy nightlife.
The tree is decorated with pretty lights for tomorrow's celebration of National Day, singapore's 4th of July.

Wednesday night out
I am out tonight with a bunch of women from school; I out-age each one by at least a decade, but they totally beat me on their strength and independence. They are all here on their own; I so admire each one of their courage.
We are way downtown at this beautiful park by the marina bay sands. The "trees" are iron towers with walkways that join them-I will have to bring josh, Ethan, and laney. I haven't seen any dogs here so I am not sure Callie can come!

Ethan's blog commet
It has been fun in Singapore with my friends and family. Most days here are spent exploring the city, trying new foods, and trying to withstand the smell of durian. Being here I have made a couple friends and started a YouTube channel, but I have yet to wait for my shipment to arrive and my legos for the fun to begin. I have just about cried because of the lack of gum, so I wait to come back to the states.
From,
Ethan

Hi guys
Tomorrow we are probably going to send you pictures of our friends and baby sitters. Callie is fine here she finally understands that this is our home. It's not as hot as you think it's more humid than hot here. You get used to the weather after about two weeks. The best thing that I kind of like is that the pool is open all year round. We went to the Zoo already well, to be a exact me and Ethan have been there twice; once for breakfast with the arang utans and once with our baby sitters. Today with our baby sitters we went to see ice age 4.

Posted by laney
Hi friends, family ni hao ma ( how are you today in Chinese!) this is my room it's theme is a jungle because it reminds me of MONKEYS! I miss yall very much! Maybe we can show you pictures of our friends here tomorrow. Right now Ethan is doing things that my dad says to do in chinese. Our friends gave us a real book they made and it teaches us how to do Chinese so we will probably do it every night . We are getting up bright and early so mommy and daddy can go to work and me and Ethan get babysitter ( they don't sit on us trust me) the three girls that babysit us are really nice. Oh and just to let you know national day is on Thursday so yeah. It's Singapores 47th birthday. Bye ( si gian)

Pure Grandeur
We have moved into our
1,200 square foot apartment in the middle of a Singapore borough with a
population density of about 16,000 people per square kilometer. It’s called Ang
Mo Kio, which reportedly means “tomato” or “Red Haired Man’s Bridge,” depending
on who you ask. The words “ang mo” are supposedly very offensive to dudes who look like, well, me.
Our apartment complex has
an uber-Asian name: Grandeur 8.
What does that mean? What
does Grandeur 8 mean?
It means everything and
nothing at all, which is exactly why I love it. It sounds like we live in a
flat straight out of a Philip K. Dick novel. I feel like someone is going to
leave a small origami unicorn made from a tinfoil gum wrapper just outside of
our door. (Can anyone name the movie, please?)
Ang Mo Kio is about as
different from SE Aurora, Colorado as we could find. As I write this, I am sitting in my
6 x 6 foot office space looking out at about 100 towers and skyscrapers that
disappear towards the hazy horizon downtown. I can watch the metro trains on
the north/south line come and go far below. A steady stream of tiny Asian cars
loops through the Ang Mo Kio town center, just there. I’m still not used to
them driving on the left; each right turn across oncoming traffic gives me
vertigo.
The handover of the keys
to our new apartment was similar to what receiving the keys to, say, 10 Downing
Street or 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. might be like: thorough, intense, full of
scrutiny. Picture me and two other guys walking through the place with
spreadsheets of about 200 boxes to check and make notes about (i.e. “small
scrape on upper tile of bathroom wall”), and you kind of have the idea. Tedious. As. Hell.
New lifestyle feature for us
Americans: remote control air conditioner units. There’s a separate unit in
each room, and each unit has its own remote. I like the “swing” feature.
Similarly, there’s a water
heater that needs switching on and off before and after usage. I remember that
cultural difference from my last time in Asia. Many cold showers to come for
sleepy Americans used to 24-7 hot water.

Shopping at the Ang Mo Kio
Fair Price Market, I was treated to some of the best back-to-back-to-back in-store
music I’ve ever heard: “Still Lovin’ You” by Scorpions, “Smoke on the Water” by
Deep Purple, and (I kid you not) “Stairway to Heaven.” The volume was pretty
loud for supermarket music, which was integral. I was playing so much air drum
and air guitar that the family acted as if it did not know me, and the
Singaporeans stayed far away as well. I was in my element and did not care one
jot. Not a jot. Rockin’ to Zeppelin in the rice cake and seaweed aisle is where
I wanna always be, man.
* * *
Callie’s finally back with
us full-time. I am starting to notice that Singaporeans are terrified of dogs.
The sight of Callie has made several very normal-looking people scream. It is a
TOTAL disconnect from American culture, where we love our pooches. I am
completely amused by this, especially since Callie is The Greatest Dog on Earth
and is as about as aggressive as a manatee.
I keep asking Callie, “Are
you the best dog in Ang Mo Kio?” and she smiles and wags her tail. There are
dark brown, smallish squirrels here, and she loves to try to chase them (until
the end of the leash jerks her back to reality).

Because the climate is so
humid, drying clothes here is a trick. On the back patio space thingy on our
apartment, there are drying racks with bamboo poles that stretch across—maybe 5
foot long poles. You hang sheets and towels over said poles and then stretch
the poles across the racks. I am almost positive that we are doing it
incorrectly, but things are drying.

I am seeing more badminton
and table tennis during these Olympics than in all
previous Olympics combined. The passion! The drama! The weird sweat-flinging
thing they do! Zhang Jike of China is my new favorite athlete, I think. That
dude can play him some ping pong. Fearsome.

People here fly kites with
multicolored-LEDs attached at night. Eerie and beautiful. Alien.
Extra-terrestrial. Haunting and goofy at the same time. Funny and mesmerizing,
kind of like a firework explosion that’s been frozen in time and given a string.
We want to get one!

Our new home
Ikea delivered all of our furniture today, Callie came back to us, and we are in our new home. Didn't really know how to use the washer, so it too 2&1/2 hours to wash one load. Still waiting for one sheet to dry...I think we'll be "camping" tonight, making do with what we can. In my need to "nest", I used an entire bottle of Clorox surface cleaner to sterilize the house. Sadly, I was wearing one of my favorite pair of new brown linen pants from jjill, so now I will have to see if they ship to Singapore-summer sales might still be going on!
More thoughts this weekend about our neighborhood, the smells associated with living on the equator, and the cleanliness here; off to check the sheets! Had to hang the duvet covers on bamboo sticks off balcony-we going local!

Key day
Today we got the keys to the condo and did a walk-thru. A few items needed to be noted, but all on all good condition. On our way out, a tiny 3" gecko emerged from behind the curtain in the master bedroom. Very auspicious, we think. We bought a tv so we wouldn't miss the Olympics, and had a great walk and dinner in our neighborhood. It's Ramadan so after sundown, it gets really busy at all of the hawker stands. Tomorrow, our first night in the new home and Callie arrives!
